The new, four-storey theatres building will significantly increase the theatres provision at Poole Hospital’s existing site. The design provides an innovative barn theatre solution, allowing for efficient and safe patient flows.
The building replaces existing low-level, modular accommodation the the eastern end of the hospital site with a modern and functional theatres block. The planning case officer noted that ‘the overall appearance is clean and contemporary and is well-suited for the proposed purpose of the extension as operating theatres’.
The upper levels are clad with non-combustible, stone wool-filled composite cladding panels, while a masonry plinth provides sufficient robustness at the lower levels. Due to the constraints of the tight site, electrical and mechanical services are run in external risers, clad in architectural expanded mesh.
The first phase of the proposed programme of works will be the construction of the new theatres block, with the refurbishment of existing theatres and the re-provision of first and second-stage recovery following in later phases.
